What will a marijuana tickest cost me in California? 11 Answers as of November 07, 2011

I was caught in possession of marijuana with no intent to sell or anything of that sort. I had less than 2 grams and was in a friend's car. I was written a court date in a month. I also lost the paper but I believe they are supposed to send a notice in the mail. What can I do about it and how long do I wait? What ticket or punishments should be ready to take?

Do not expect a notice in the mail. If you were written a citation and signed it, promising to appear, that constitutes notice of the court date. If you fail to appear, a warrant could issue for your arrest. Contact an attorney to find out when your court date is. They can also discuss ways to handle the case that could avoid fines and having it on your record.

Contact the court or district attorney's office in your area to learn of your court date. Get an attorney to defend you. People think that marijuana charges are "no big deal", particularly because in some circumstances they may be infractions and not criminal convictions. Such convictions can have repercussions, including the loss of your license with the DMV! Most people are unaware of this. Contact an attorney right away.

Expect a small fine in the range of $150 or so, depending on the county. The court can get you onto a payment plan or you can arrange to work it off with community service if you prefer.

You should hire a lawyer, who may be able to negotiate a reduction or dismissal, since marijuana possession is a rather minor charge. Bottom line: don't go to court by yourself and just plead guilty. You'll regret it.

I would not wait on notice to be mailed if they gave you a written citation with a court date on it. You should contact the court to find out when your next court date is. If you miss it, they will likely issue a bench warrant for your arrest based on failure to appear on a misdemeanor charge. On infraction charges with a failure to appear, they would more likely issue a hold on your drivers license. Plus there is the issue of additional penalties for failure to appear. I would recommend hiring an attorney to handle this matter for you as they may be able to get the charges dismissed or reduced, thus mitigating potential consequences.

Neither the court nor the DA are required to send a letter. You should contact the court and confirm the appearance date. You can be charged with transporting which is a felony. You might want to talk to an attorney.
