What will happen if I'm charged for petit larceny for the first time? 1 Answers as of May 11, 2011

I'm 18 yrs old and this is my first offense. My summons is in 3 weeks. Will a PD be appointed to me when I get to court or must I apply for one before my court date? What will the procedures be at court? How can I get this off my records since it's my first time? I heard a city attorney could help me with that. I have no clue how any of this work and feel helpless, and scared too. Will I most likely go to jail?

You will not be eligible for a public defender for a misdemeanor as the prosecutor will not seek jail time. You will be probably offered diversion where you get the case dismissed after going to petty larceny school and completing community service.
