Often done when there are overlapping charges that don't make sense.

The answer depends upon the reason for the dismissal. In general, a dismissal of criminal charges is a good thing from an immigration standpoint. However, the charges that were lodged against a person can still impact him or her if they admitted the allegations and/or had restrictions placed on receiving the dismissal. The individual would have to disclose the arrest, but it may or may not be considered a conviction. I would need more information about the case to make an assessment of the impact on a person's immigration status.
