What is a patent agent? 1 Answers as of July 20, 2010

Is a patent agent different than a lawyer? Do you need both to file a patent? I want to file a patent and was just wondering if I should find one.

A patent agent is someone licensed to help file patents. They do not have to be a lawyer admitted to practice law in the state, but they can be and frequently are. There are also patent attorneys that do the same, but who are not patent agents. Consult with either or both to get your questions answered about your invention and the costs of filing.
