Your son is a father and fathers help support their children just like you supported your son. If mother goes and asks for child support then your son will have to go to court and tell the judge his situation. They may assign to him the minimum amount to pay monthly. He might have to get a part time job to help out and extend his schooling. If mother goes on welfare then the father will be responsible to pay back the welfare. The welfare system will start child support. Grandparents are not obligated to pay support. If you help your son, that is your choice.

You, as grandparents do not have any financial liability for your grandchild. However, your son does. If the mother seeks child support he is not going to get out of child support. However, with proper legal representation, the economic liability can be significantly reduced. When you are dealing with children, competent legal representation should always be sought, as the subject matter of the litigation is so very important. One mistake here could cause the biggest adverse consequence of your life.
