What is the law about inheritance tax? 1 Answers as of July 16, 2011

My mother was a Pennsylvania resident. She died six months ago leaving an estate of about $350,000 to be divided among six heirs, all children and grandchildren. All six of us have received tax bills from Pennsylvania but only one of us lives in that state. Do the non-Pennsylvania heirs have to pay the tax, or can we ignore the tax bills?

You cannot ignore the tax bill. Mom's estate is subject to PA inheritance taxes. However, you should know that you may be better off filing an inheritance tax return to take various deductions and paying the tax bill in that fashion.
