What happens to credit and bills after separation? Posted on April 04, 2011

My sons wife left him. Neither one can afford to pay for a divorce. They have a home and 2 cars in both names (hers has payment and she took it and his is payed off) and a lot of bills. They are in the process of trying to sell the home to cover most of their debt. The problem is neither one of them can pay the bills by themselves and he is always fighting with her to pay her half. She has cut off all communications with him. So is there any benefit for him to contact their debtors and tell them the problem and let them know he is willing to still pay his half for now and give them her address so they can contact her to see what she is going to do? Or is it going to matter if he pays his half or not if only half the bills are getting paid. Please advise on what is his best options regarding this matter. He may end up having to file some kind of bankruptcy in the end depending on how long it take the home to sell. She is not willing to pay any of the home bills until it does sell even though neither one is living in the home. He is willing to do until winter but he can't afford to pay to heat it through the winter months if it does not sell by then.
