What do I do if the IRS says I didn't report income? 2 Answers as of August 05, 2010

I worked at a job for only 3 weeks and then quit because they didn't pay me. I never got a W2 or even a pay stub. Now the IRS has sent me a letter that says that I didn't report about $1,400 in income. How could that be true if I quit without getting any pay at all? What can I do?

I would first make a claim at the Labor board for your wages. Obviously, they reported your wages to the IRS without paying you. After you get money, you can pay the tax. Alternatively, you can write the IRS and explain what happened and that since you never received the money and thus you don't owe the tax.

You may want to contact the former employer for the documentation. Our office may be able to assist you with the IRS as well.
