What can I do if I have not finished my alcohol classes? 13 Answers as of August 26, 2011

I am paying my fines and have completed the work program for my DUI. I have not finished my alcohol classes by the deadline due to school and lacking the money to pay for it. Also, I will be moving and would like to take the courses in another location. What should I do?

You and your attorney should go to court to ask for an extension for the classes. If you are moving, request the judge to let you take classes out of state. Note that you will likely have to start the classes from the start in another state. Also, even if the judge allows you to take classes out of state to satisfy the Court, it will not satisfy the DMV, and in order to get your CA license back, you will have to complete a CA DUI course.

You can go back to court and ask to have your case put on calendar and request an extension for completing the class. You can also ask to have your class transferred to another location but you may loose the progress you have done so far if the classes don't transfer your credit so you should look into that prior to making that request in court. If you are going to be late in completing the class, you must request an extension or else the court may issue a warrant or find you in violation of probation.

Go back to court. Ask the Court Clerk for a calender request and ask the judge to refer you to the First Offender Program and allow you to do it in another County.

You should calendar the matter with the court and make a court appearance asking for an extension of time and permission to take the course in another county.

First of all, you need to go to court (or have a lawyer go to court) to convince the Judge to give you an extension, or else a warrant will be issued for your arrest when the deadline passes. Secondly, you will not be able to transfer your classes to another location (and forget about it if you're even thinking of doing the classes in another state, which will result in your license forever being suspended in California).

Go back to court and make that request. Just don't let it go to a warrant.

Go back to the court or if you have an attorney have him go back to court before the completion date and let them know (1) you need more time and (2) you need to transfer to another location.

Go to court before the deadline and ask for an extension. If you have been dropped from the class, ask the judge to order re-enrollment. If you do not complete the classes, the DMV will never give you your license back, and you can be in violation of the terms of your probation and sent to jail.

If there is no arrest warrant issued against you for failure to complete or appear, then you must return to court and beg for more time to complete. In order to get a class transferred to another state or jurisdiction will require you provide the court with all the info on the new schools curriculum and approval for use in their own state, and with proof that school will accept you. If serious about hiring counsel to help in this, and if this is in SoCal courts, feel free to contact me.
