My friend had a warrant for possession and he couldn't afford the bond so he's waiting in jail until the pre-trial/trial.

A trial is handled by court scheduling. Six months is not unheard of, but all depends on many,, many factors. Time spent in jail is credited for any time, if convicted, sentenced. The attorney is given the court dates and should have better knowledge.

It depends on a number of factors- how old the case is, how backed up the court docket is, has there or will there be any delays such as motions or adjournments. Whatever the case, he needs a really good lawyer representing him.
