What are the consequences of having less than a gram of marijuana? 1 Answers as of February 13, 2012

I am a 20 year old college student and was at my friend's house and she decided to buy less than a gram of weed from somebody and I decided to smoke it with her because I thought it would be harmless and fun. There was a complaint of the smell of weed called into the cops and they came to the door. We were just about ready to go out so were thinking it was one of our other friends so I opened the door and it was the cops. So she invited them in and they found the small (less than a gram) sack of weed. They confiscated it and asked us some questions like who lived at the house and so forth. Her roommate was gone for the weekend so it was just her at her house and me hanging out with her. So they gave us an option of having them search the house at that time or come back with a warrant. Knowing she had absolutely nothing else illegal in her house she gave them the ok to search it. They searched the entire house with the drug dog and found nothing else, naturally. They ended up questioning us more about where we got it and what their name was and so forth. They were there for about 30 minutes and then after they confiscated the bag they were about to leave. They said they would turn it into the narcotics detective and then the detective would call us for a meeting with him and that if we cooperated and told them where we got it from and helped them out then it would help us out tremendously and we may not even have to worry about anything. - I am planning on telling them where I got it but the only thing I know about the person is his name. My friend knows him better than I do. My friend also was the one who owned the pipe, bought the marijuana and whose house we were at. We only had a gram of marijuana with us; the cops said they weren't out to get us but to get the seller. What are the possibilities for me as far as consequences?

If you are charged with the possession, the consequences could be up to 1 yr in jail and up to $2500 fine. Normally, on a first offense, you may be offered a diversion or probation rather than serve any jail time. If you cooperate, they may not even charge you.
