They are not the same thing. An invention disclosure document does not provide you any protection at all. The best you can do with this document is argue a date of invention due to your disclosure to the USPTO.

No. Not much is gained from an invention disclosure document to benefit you. I will prevent someone else from getting a patent on the same thing but it gets you absolutely nothing. A patent application may mature into an allowed patent which will give you a 20 year monopoly on the manufacture, sales and use of the invention.
