What am I liable for if a kid was bitten by my dog? 3 Answers as of June 21, 2012

I live in Utah 84095. I have told this kid to stay out of my yard. I have told his parents to keep their kids out of my yard. I have purchased locks for my gates specifically because of the kids in this family.

If your dog was properly restrained on your property, you should not have any liability. Contact your home owners insurance.

In Utah, the owner or keeper of a dog is liable for injuries caused by the dog. Make sure your homeowners insurance covers dog bites, and make sure your gates and locks are secure.

A dog owner is automatically liable for the injuries of his/her dog. You may have some defenses to say you warned the kids, etc. But that will only reduce the amount of damages, not the liability itself.
