Were you injured by the car? If yes, you might be able to pursue a personal injury case. However, there will be a question of YOUR share of liability for entering the roadway. If you just stepped into traffic, you may have a very difficult time as people blocking a sidewalk is not an emergency suddenly appearing that requires a pedestrian to enter the roadway with traffic on it.

You should consult with an attorney right away. If there was a police report, you should obtain it. Depending on the facts, how far into the street you were, how wide the lane was, how far the car was from you when you stepped into the street, lighting, etc., you may have a claim. The driver is always to take care not to hit pedestrians. California also uses comparative fault of the parties, so you may have a claim.

Thus, I recommend you consult with myself or another experienced attorney before filing a lawsuit. m

It sounds like you got very lucky. Although I don't know the level of your injuries, my firm handles many pedestrian accident cases each year, and the injuries are typically catastrophic or fatal. What you should do is speak with an attorney that has experience handling these types of cases. Don't let more time pass before consulting with an attorney who can properly evaluate your claim.
