Should I claim my child as a dependent? 2 Answers as of November 03, 2010

My child lives in my household but she is 26 years old and working. She takes care of all her expenses and the only thing she does not pay is rent and food because she lives with us. Should I still claim her as a dependent?

Generally, in order to claim your child as a dependent, they must come within the definition of a dependent for the IRS. You may be able to determine whether or not she is a dependent for tax purposes here: http://www.irs.gov/publications/p501/ar02.html#en_US_publink1000220868 .

If she is working and self sufficient in other ways, she cannot be claimed as dependent.
