Is it possible to get my own public defender for a petit larceny? 6 Answers as of February 22, 2012
I am 20 years old and my mother still claims me. I got arrested for Petit Larceny and I can not afford an attorney. I rather not get my mother involve. Is there any way I can get a Public Defender on my own even though I am claimed by my mother? I have my own job.Free Case Evaluation by a Local Lawyer!

When you are arraigned the court will ask you if you want a public defender or Legal Aid will interview you to determine if you qualify. You will be given an ACD dismissal and have no record so it's safe to use a public defender if you get the ACD. If they cannot get you a dismissal you should ask your parents to retain a lawyer or you will have a criminal record and find it very hard to get a good job for the rest of your life. Unfortunately, kids are immature and bad decision makers. They commit crimes, get into fights, abuse drugs and alcohol, and often wind up getting arrested. After the first few times they will get a criminal record and after that they will go to jail. Success is about getting a good education, staying out of trouble, and making good decisions. You made a big mistake, use this experience to learn a life lesson.
