Is it legal to fire someone because their name is too long? Posted on July 25, 2011

I was hired by a contractor to work as a registrar for the Department of Transportation. I filled out the paperwork and I was notified that I had passed my security clearance and that I should report for work the next day. On Thursday, I filled out more paperwork received my building badge and started training. I was called at 1:30 by the contractor and was told that I could not work as a registrar as my name was too long. My official name on my passport and driver's license is 19 letters long. It exceeded the 18 letter maximum for contractors and that I would need to be escorted out of the building. Is this legal? Is this discrimination against people with long names ?
