Is it legal to buy and sell a department store cash register receipt online? 2 Answers as of December 07, 2011

I want to know if there are any laws that would prevent me from being able to sell a completely legitimate purchase receipt to another person online. Also, if it would be legal to purchase another person's receipt from them online.

Those actions could be linked to later acts of fraud or theft by another person who may attempt to use the receipt illegally. You could then be charged as an accomplice. I could see a jury convicting you based on the act of selling the receipt and then being used to commit a fraud. You could argue that you had no intent, but it would likely be a shallow argument. That's just one of the potential problems I see.
