Is it legal for past employers to slander my name when being questioned as a reference? Posted on March 08, 2011

Through a reliable source, I was informed my past employer received a phone call yesterday 3/7/11 and told the party on the other line that I was involved in an affair with my supervisor, and that I was contemplating stealing a large amount of money prior to my resignation. This was never the case. Is this legal? Can past employers, when questioned as a reference from current or possible employers, slander my name through false accusations?
