Is it legal for the facility to ask me to stay between my shift but is not willing to pay? 1 Answers as of August 14, 2013

I work at a home facility for the mentally disabled. My shift is Sat. 6am-10pm and Sun. the same. The 8 hours in between they want me to stay there in case something happens because no one else is available. They say I’m supposed to be able to sleep but if the residents need something I’m supposed to help. The thing is they don't want to pay me for the eight hours at all. Is this legal? Confused in WI.
