Is it illegal to dispose of a pet remains if the owners have not returned for them? Posted on August 05, 2011

I work at a veterinary practice in Ca. We have pets remains returned by clients request, but some clients do not ever return or contact our office after the remains are returned. We have limited storage space, and are unable to keep the remains for longer than 6 months. The remains are returned to the cremation service and are disposed of accordingly. Is there a length of time, legally, that we are required to hold onto the remains? Thank you for your time.
