In Massachusetts, is it legal to dismiss an employee early for providing said two weeks notice? Posted on June 21, 2011

After a request from my manager, I submitted a written notice of resignation, citing last date of employment for July 1, 2011. On June 21, I was dismissed from the job stating that it is a company decision to not allow resigning employees to work if they hold a client-facing role, only paying me up until June 21. In Massachusetts, is it legal to dismiss an employee early for providing said two weeks notice (two and a half, in my case)?
