After a felony conviction you will lose certain rights such as the right to own, possess or control firearms. This right does not automatically get reinstated, you must petition the government to have your rights restored. This will be in Federal District Court. You should consult with an attorney who practices in Federal court for details. State laws differ as to how long you must wait to avoid being charged with a new felony for possessing a firearm after a felony conviction. In Kansas the minimum time is ten years after the felony is completely closed. This time limit does not restore your rights. You may not be charged with a state crime, but if your rights were not restored you may be charged in federal court.
