My husband has been held there for 8 hours, how long can they keep him? They say they are waiting on his fingerprints to come back.

The sheriffs are correct. They must be certain there are no other holds on your husband, and he must also be processed out of the jail facility. 8 hours is kind of long, but not unusual.
