You can give custody to anyone by agreeing to it in Family Court with whoever wants to care for your child. You may not want to care for your child physically or emotionally, but you cannot be relieved of your financial obligations to support a child that you brought into this world. You are required to financially support this child until he or she is at least 21 years old.

I assume that when you say "sign my rights away" you mean that you want to relinquish parental rights. You have to file such an action with the court. The court will decide based on the facts.

Your child is entitled to two parents and to support from both parents. A parent can't "divorce" his/her child and absolve himself/herself of financial responsibility to support his/her child. If you choose not to participate in parenting your child, your child support will be maximized, since child support is based on each parent's income andpercentage of custodial timeshare. If the other party gets married and his/her spouse wants toadopt your child, if you give your consent to the Social Worker to terminate your parental rights, the adoption, when completed, will cut off your parental rights and obligations.

There is no such thing as "signing away rights" unless someone else wishes to adopt your child. When you choose to unzip your pants you are liable for 18 years of support. Your need some mental health counseling to find out why you are so irresponsible. I'd also suggest a vasectomy before you try to stick the taxpayers with more of your offspring. But to answer your question, you have an 18 year responsibility and you can expect to land in jail if you fail to meet it.

Your spouse should ask the court to change custody and you cooperate. This is how you get an order changing your custody rights. Yes, you will still have to pay child support - possibly more than before because now your spouse has the child for a longer time and spends additional funds for child maintenance. The only way to avoid that is to have your parental rights terminated.

You cannot sign your rights away unless you are doing so pursuant to someone else "replacing" you (for instance, if the child's other parent is married and the spouse is attempting to adopt). If you were in a position to successfully voluntarily terminate your parental rights, you would no longer be obligated to support the child.

In order for you to resign or terminate your parental rights, you have to file a motion and go to court. Any agreement, not signed by a court is invalid. You cannot just waive your parental rights. The right to have a parent belongs to the child and the court has to have independent evidence that it is in the best interest of a child to uphold such an agreement.
