Does a restaurant have the right to refuse service? Posted on July 22, 2011

I was recently told by one of my managers that if 2 former employees (whom left the business willingly with no prior accusations of misconduct) come into our restaurant, I was to tell them that we can't serve them. I told the manager that this is not right because it is open to the general public, and he stated that it is a privately owned company so we can. I responded by saying that if they do enter the restaurant I will tell him and have him take care of it. Once the owner heard what I had said, he gave me a "write-up" for insubordination and told me that if I don't feel comfortable with my "responsibilities" as a server, this might not be the job for me. I guess my question is whether or not the restaurant can actually refuse to serve these patrons.
