Do you have to file taxes when outside of the United States? 2 Answers as of November 05, 2010

Do I have to file any sort of tax document in the US if I am a citizen but am going to be living and working outside of the country for all of next year? I am afraid of being audited when I get back because how would they know I am gone?

Generally, U.S. citizens who live abroad and earn income still have to file a tax return in the U.S. You may be able to minimize the tax liability if you qualify for a foreign earning income exclusion and/or the foreign housing exclusion and deduction. You may be able to obtain more information from your tax attorney and/or by going to www.irs.gov and looking for the Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad.
