Do we have to pay taxes on a personal injury award in Nebraska? 1 Answers as of February 18, 2011

My mother was awarded a personal injury amount under 20k last year in the State of Nebraska, Douglas County. She is retired and was wondering if she needs to pay taxes on this lump sum? According to her lawyer, she does not have too. We just want to double-check if there is any instance of her needing to pay taxes on the award amount. The lawyer indicated that he would have to pay taxes considering it's income to him but that she would not have to pay anything. Can you please verify this? Thank you in advance.
