Can police impound my car if I'm not driving it but I have a warrant for a traffic violation? 3 Answers as of July 11, 2014

I have a warrant but my stepson was driving my car with a valid license. He got pulled over by the police and they said there was a warrant on the car. They put him out and impounded the car. It has valid plates and insurance but when I called the impound yard, they said the police said they impounded the car because of an arrest but no one was arrested. Can they do that or is that false pretenses?

This does not sound like a valid action. This depends on the State where this happened.

Was the car used in the commission of a crime? If so, the police could impound it for search of evidence. If not, unsure of all the facts behind it being impounded.
