Can I work and live in the US if I was involved in a hit and run accident? 3 Answers as of October 04, 2011
I had a hit-and-run while driving drunk in 1998. Never had any alcohol-related problems before and after. I seek to work an live in the United States. Got convicted to a monetary fine in Germany. No further problems since. I am working in the airline business since 1997 for the same company. Due to my good work record, they even stood by me way back then. Is there any chance, I can work and live in the United States?Free Case Evaluation by a Local Lawyer!

First, you would need an immigrant visa or non-immigrant visa that authorizes you to live and work in the United States. You may need a waiver depending upon the severity of the hit-and-run accident and offense in Germany.

The drunk driving incident does not necessarily prevent you from obtaining a work visa or immigrant visa. Most alcohol related offenses are "strict liability" offenses and do not involve moral turpitude, so they will not prevent a work visa. However, we would need to meet with you and assess your case in detail including your immigration history and the job which you seek to determine if there is an appropriate work visa available to you.

If you otherwise qualify for a working visa, the 1998 conviction should not be a bar, but the Consular official who interviews you may ask about it.
