Can I legally purchase and own a rifle and pass the NICS? 5 Answers as of January 30, 2012

I was charged with a non-violent felony when I was 18 in 2006; I ended up receiving youthful offender adjudication. I am about to go purchase a rifle, and based on reading NYS laws regarding gun ownership and what Y.O. means, I should be good to go. Will I pass the NICS check that NYS FFL dealers (gun store) do to see if you can legally purchase a rifle? Also, I want to confirm that it is legal for me to own a rifle in the State Of New York? (The Y.O. is the only thing on my record besides traffic tickets)

I would need further details but probably the YO treatment should mean you will be able to purchase firearms.

Because a YO is a "non-criminal" disposition it should not affect your ability to obtain a rifle.

That is not a criminal conviction so you should be able to buy a gun. Take a course in gun ownership and safety first.

If you received a youthful offender adjudication (to) then you do not have a felony conviction and therefore do not suffer the same loss if privileges as you would with a felony conviction. You should be fine, just make sure that the yo went through.
