Can I file taxes for my mother? 3 Answers as of March 28, 2011

My mother can't seem to find time to file her taxes, but I would have to take it in to a tax office because its a 1099 and a W-2. Can I file her taxes for her? Or can I do it online?

Have her sign a durable power of attorney that allows for you filing tax returns on her behalf. Be sure to attach a copy of the signed power to her return if you are filing for her.

Your mother will need to review and sign off on the tax returns even if you take them to a tax preparer to work on.
