Can a hospital keep someone involuntarily if they were admitted for suicide attempt? Posted on July 07, 2011

This person has been in eating disorder and psychiatric treatments previously. They were admitted into a hospital upon suicide attempt on June 8th. Insurance dropped coverage on June 28th as they believed this person no longer require inpatient care. This person wants to be released but the hospital does not believe they are safe to go home is this an across-board policy, or would it have to be specified in her admissions paperwork?
