Can a detective question me without telling me why he was questioning me? 2 Answers as of August 27, 2012

A detective came to my house last night wanting to question me about something that happened. He won’t tell me what it is about but wants me to answer questions. What should I do? I am not even sure why he is contacting me.

Although you are not required to answer any questions from a law enforcement officer at any time, it might be worthwhile to spend a few bucks to see if a lawyer can find out what the investigation is about and help you decide if you want to talk to the detective. He could also be present with you if you do talk with him.

You don't have to speak to any police officer if you don't want to.
