A patent application is required to contain drawings for the understanding of the subject matter sought to be patented. The drawings must show every feature of the invention as specified in the claims. The drawings do not have to be technical or formal so long as they fulfill these requirements.

Yes to both questions. Utility patents require enough drawings so that the invention can be understood to the degree that one of ordinary skill in the art could make and use the invention. Design patents generally require top bottom left side right side front and back drawings. The USPTO website has a drawing guide available.
