Are divorce records made public in California? 3 Answers as of October 21, 2010

I have a friend living in California and I know that him and his wife were having a rough relationship and were thinking about divorce. I do not want to ask him directly about it but I was wondering if there was a way for me to find out through a phone call or something whether there are records of his divorce or if he is still married.
