Am I responsible for my mothers funeral cost? 3 Answers as of August 11, 2015

I am my mother’s only surviving relative. We have not spoken in over 20 years. She left a $75k life insurance policy to my daughter from my first marriage who is a minor and in custody of my ex-wife. My ex-wife has made it clear that she is not paying for any arrangements. There is no will. I do not want to pay for any arrangements at all, I do not care what happens to her remains. I do not want to incur any cost or spend any time or effort on this. What is my legal responsibility in California? Can I do nothing?

You have no legal obligation. Her estate is liable for the funeral expenses. The insurance policy is outside the estate [passes automatically]. If there are no assets in the estate, then I guess the state will pay for a cheap disposal of the body.
