Am I liable for taxes owed before I purchased the website? 3 Answers as of November 16, 2010

I need to know what legal form to write to release me from liability for past owed taxes from an ecommerse site I am purchasing. The seller has not paid any state or federal taxes whatsoever since 2003. Will I be liable for the past owed taxes?

Generally, the company who originally owed the taxes would be liable for their payment; however, it may be necessary to review the documents you signed during the purchase of the sight. I would recommend collecting all of the documentation related to the site and having it reviewed by a tax attorney.

The short answer is no but if he did not pay taxes there might be other issues. He might not have had the authority to sell the website since it could have been attached as an asset to satisfy the tax lien.
